The Kitchen Table

Food AS a love language

Food and family. One is rooted in the other. The type of food we share is an expression of culture, its preparation is an expression of care and nourishment, and its enjoyment is comfort and quality time. At the end of the day, it’s all love.

Above, I’m holding a photograph of my mom’s family taken in the 60’s. They were new Canadians and didn’t have much. They spent time around the table and connected over food and the comfort of each other’s company. Their riches came in the form of familiarity and support, something that can’t be bought.

This image is important to me because it paints a portrait of what their life was like back then. Having this image, and others like it, allows me to know about my family’s lives and my history, and makes me feel part of it. It strengthens my identity and connects me to my roots.

When I look at it, I feel a sense of home.
